Nottingham's
Extreme Science Program for the 2005-2006 school year is off to a great
start! The teachers, administrators and parents of our school support
this opportunity for enrichment experiences in the area of physical and
earth sciences for our fourth and fifth grade students. We believe they will benefit from the
enriched, solid foundation in science-oriented curriculum objectives that
this program provides! Extreme Science creates a great setting for
hands-on learning about animals, weather, soil, geology, energy, pulleys
and levers, and water.
Parents! Remember that this is an extension and enrichment of the
regular classroom curriculum! You are invited to help out in any way you
can! If you haven't joined the Extreme Science team this year, it's never
too late! On-line Volunteer Registration is available so that you may
volunteer your time to work alongside your child's group. We welcome your participation in as
many of the 2-hour sessions as you wish throughout the school year.
If you would like more information or can help in any way, please
contact the school.
Grade 4 Topics
Grade 5 Topics
Extreme Science is a supplemental science program
presented by parent volunteers to all students in our fourth and fifth grades.
Labs are scheduled on Friday mornings and participation by the two grade
levels alternates every week. A PTA volunteer coordinator schedules the
labs and conducts training sessions to give the other volunteers a chance
to run through the lab experience before teaching it to the students.
In the fall, we cover the physical sciences with topics that
include static electricity, minerals, the pH of water, and caloric
energy. During the spring, the focus is on life sciences with each grade
level doing three dissections.
This is a tremendous enrichment opportunity! The labs are
"hands-on" and fun for students and parent instructors alike.
Sessions are not difficult to teach and do not require anything beyond
attending the practice sessions. These are scheduled before you are to
present the lessons to the classes (or you may view a training video). We
are always looking for volunteers to lead a session! All it takes is a
call to the school office to become a part of one of Nottingham's special
programs!
