Elementary's Guidance and Counseling program has a lot to offer your child!
The campus counselor develops, presents, and coordinates a variety of
special services for students and parents and provides support to the
classroom teacher and administrative staff.
In meeting the changing interpersonal and developmental needs of
students in kindergarten through fifth grade, the counselor works with
students in the regular classroom setting in different formats as a part
of the SBISD Developmental
Guidance Program. Emotional Intelligence is the title of a
recent bestseller which points out that successful adults are
distinguished by their "E.Q.", or emotional intelligence. The
ability to negotiate, communicate, and work productively in a group,
large or small, is at the heart of successful living. Guidance lessons
teach children how to handle difficult interpersonal situations,
communicate effectively, negotiate, develop awareness and skill with
specific "success" behavior within interpersonal relationships,
and how to set personal and academic goals.
As a part of the Guidance Program, students are also provided
examples and opportunities to demonstrate these and other important Life Skills in daily
interactions with other students and staff. At the end of each nine-week
grading period, each classroom teacher in grades one through five selects
approximately five students in their class who have consistently improved
and successfully demonstrated use of the targeted Life Skill during the
previous marking period. These Life Skill Award Winners are honored for
their efforts during our Knights of the Round Table Luncheon held in the
school library at the end of each grading period.
An additional component of the campus Guidance Program is the
coordination of special programs and direct instruction concerning drug,
alcohol, and tobacco awareness and resistance. Each year, in conjunction
with the PTA committee representative, special campus-wide instructional
activities are developed during October's Red Ribbon Week which are
designed to continue throughout the year.
Each August, the campus counselor assists the Campus GT
Coordinator in the annual Gifted and Talented screening cycle. This is a
data collecting process that lasts through December when the District
PGP/Spiral Screening Committee makes placement decisions. If you are
interested in having your child participate in the screening, you will
need to contact the school as early as possible in the fall of the year.
A detailed description of our Gifted and Talented programs and screening
processes are included on this web site.
Crisis counseling is offered on an
as-needed basis and the counselor provides information and coordinates
resources for families with a variety of needs.
At Nottingham,
we work to facilitate the successful development of well-rounded,
academically successful students with the interpersonal, communication,
and problem-solving skills needed for happy, productive adulthood!
