At Nottingham,
we believe that a quality art program is essential at every level of
education if we are to have an aesthetically aware society which
perceives the abundant beauty of the world and which expresses and
communicates that perception in creative, powerful ways. Research has
demonstrated the inter-related nature of the fine arts with applied
sciences and mathematics. The visual-spatial intelligence necessary for
adult careers in these areas is developed and supported through the arts.
Both the district and campus goals for Art Education are based on
a learner-centered classroom. Experiences in art develop self-expression
and a feeling of success while building skills and concepts integrated
throughout the curriculum. Such experiences will help the child to:
- develop a positive self-image
- grow in creativity
- become successful problem-solvers
- appreciate the cultures and aesthetic values of other people
- gain knowledge of history and present conditions through
works of art
Nottingham Art Education is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge
& Skills (TEKS). Art instruction is important in developing skills necessary
for students to be successful in the school setting and on school and
standardized tests such as TAAS.
Students develop awareness of space, form, texture, value, and
color by evaluating and creating works of art during their work time. Art
instruction is provided to all students every week at Nottingham. In
addition, art is integrated into all other academic disciplines
throughout the year and is one of the many programs necessary to the
development of well-rounded students.
We emphasize that time spent by each student in art instruction be
focused on productive, on-task behavior. Students work together to earn
bonus points toward a class party held during art class. Students may
earn up to four parties a year. We follow the Community Agreements while
working together, and ask that you reinforce these agreements, or rules,
with your child:
Mutual Respect:
Respecting our own and other people's time, space, ideas and materials
Active Listening:
Listening not only to the instructor but also to each other
The Right to Participate:
Using time wisely and staying on task
Only Give "Put-Ups":
Treating and talking to others in the same way we wish to be treated
